Prospective FIPs intend to meet the requirements for active FIPs within one year. These projects are posted on FisheryProgress to help users identify opportunities to support developing FIPs and prevent the start of duplicate FIPs. Prospective FIPs are not yet demonstrating progress toward sustainability.
Coordinated by China Blue, the octopus FIP shares the same target fishing ground and part of the stakeholders with the on-going Squid FIP in the same region. Given their common challenges and network resources, a similar improvement strategy and workplan will be developed. Therefore, a harvest-landing monitoring mechanism will be established to improve collection of fishery information. Such information will be used to better evaluate the current sustainability level of the fishery against MSC standards. Necessary improvement recommendations will be proposed to fishery authorities, and trainings for fishermen and fishery managers will be organized to enhance the awareness and capacity of sustainable fisheries management for key stakeholders. A potential output of this project includes identification of the most suitable fishery unit (species, fishing area and gear, fishing fleet) to obtain MSC fishery certificate for when it is ready to be assessed against the standards.
Currently, this FIP has support from:
- Beaver Street Fisheries
- Shantou Haimao Foods
