Overview

What is a Prospective FIP?
Prospective FIPs intend to meet the requirements for active FIPs within one year. These projects are posted on FisheryProgress to help users identify opportunities to support developing FIPs and prevent the start of duplicate FIPs. Prospective FIPs are not yet demonstrating progress toward sustainability.

This FIP covers the Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis)  from High Seas Pocket 1 (HPS1) in the western central pacific ocean, caught by Philippine registered vessels with purse seine anchored FAD sets.

The general objective of this FIP is to have an MSC full assessment by 2024. This FIP will specifically focus on the following:

  • To work on the Harvest Strategy, and Harvest Control Rules and Tools in order to maintain a sustainable stock of Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) in the target area
  • To reduce the environmental impact especially of dislodged FADs which is about half of the deployed
  • To improve the availability of fishery performance and management actions, and the enforcement of sanctions to non-compliant fishers
