Overview

FIP Description 

The Ontario Commercial Fisheries' Association (OCFA), Great Lakes Food Company Ltd. (GLFC), Presteve Foods Limited (PFL) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) are leading a cooperative initiative to begin preparations for the eventual MSC certification of the bottom trawl fishery for rainbow smelt in Lake Erie. A MSC pre-assessment was completed in late 2017.

FIP Objective(s) 

The overall objective is to prepare the fishery for full MSC assessment by April 2024. Management outcome objectives are as follows:

  • Harvest strategy with harvest control rules established (May 2019 to April 2024)
  • Monitoring and assessment of the target stock improved (May 2019 to April 2024)
  • Fishery impacts managed to minimize risk to the ecosystem (May 2019 to April 2024)
  • Fishery-specific management objectives relating to healthy stocks and minimization of environmental impacts in place (May 2020 to April 2023)
  • Decision-making processes strengthened with a clearer scientific basis (May 2021 to April 2024)
  • Performance evaluation of the management system in place (May 2021 to April 2024)
