Overview

FIP Description 

The Eastern Pacific Ocean swordfish - longline FIP is designed to improve the fishery by supporting progress toward the global standard for sustainable fisheries of the Marine Stewardship Council program. The fishery is governed by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC). The swordfish is caught by vessels flagged to Panama and Vanuatu. Project hosts are Fong Hsiang and SYM-PAC.

By December 2023, the FIP aims to:

  1. Review relevant national and international legislation to determine where ETP species have a potential overlap with the fishery. (2.3.1, MSC 2016:197)
  2. Identify the potential risks by the fishery to ETP species and review the efficacy of the measures in place to mitigate this risk. Include in a critical review of the evidence available. (2.3.2, MSC 2016:214)
  3. Undertake a review of the monitoring/control/surveillance system in place in the fishery. (2.3.3, MSC 2016:226)
