Launched in 2016, FisheryProgress is a one-stop shop for information on the progress of global fishery improvement projects (FIPs). FisheryProgress makes tracking progress more efficient, consistent, and reliable for businesses that support FIPs.
FisheryProgress grew out of work by the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions to revise its Guidelines for Supporting Fishery Improvement Projects in 2015. Before FisheryProgress, one of the biggest challenges was that there was no way to know if FIPs meet the guidelines and, more importantly, if they were making progress. Determined to find a solution for this problem, the Alliance revised guidelines to include the creation of an online tool – FisheryProgress – to make FIP progress information easier to access, track, and compare.
FisheryProgress was developed and is managed by FishChoice. FishChoice creates powerful online tools that give thousands of businesses the actionable information they need to improve the sustainability of their seafood products. Along with FisheryProgress, FishChoice is responsible for FishChoice.com, which connects seafood buyers with global producers of sustainable or improving products from high-demand species. FisheryProgress is overseen by an Advisory Committee, and a Technical Committee helps to guide the evaluation process and related functionality.
FisheryProgress is a progress reporting platform that makes FIP progress data transparent and accessible. FisheryProgress reviews data and information of FIPs listed on the site for completeness and credibility (e.g., supported by evidence, is feasible, and is aligned with other information provided by the FIP), and to determine whether the information submitted effectively meets the site’s policies and requirements. FisheryProgress does not endorse or verify claims regarding FIPs’ environmental sustainability, on-the-ground working conditions, or the absence of human and labor rights violations.
