Overview

PT. Aneka Tuna, in collaboration with its suppliers (PT. Gabungan Era Mandiri, PT. Hasil Melimpah, PT. Karya Mandiri Citramina, and PT. Tuna Indonesia Mandiri), initiated the Purse Seine Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in the Indian Ocean. These companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote sustainable practices. Recognizing the importance of sustainability, they aim to ensure that the raw materials they harvest or procure are sourced responsibly to support long-term business viability and environmental stewardship. The UoAs are Indonesian FMA 572 and 573, targeting stock of skipjack, yellowfin, and bigeye tuna in the Indian Ocean, using purse seine gear.

FIP Description

PT. Aneka Tuna, in collaboration with its suppliers (PT. Gabungan Era Mandiri, PT. Hasil Melimpah, PT. Karya Mandiri Citramina, and PT. Tuna Indonesia Mandiri), initiated the Purse Seine Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in the Indian Ocean.

FIP Objective(s)

The objectives of this FIP are to maintain the stock status or target species around MSY, strengthen the data collection and decision-making process in the Indian Ocean Purse Seine Tuna Fishery, and enter full assessment on Sept 2029 by the latest.

Specific target on each Principle:

Principle 1:

By Sep 2029, the FIP will maintain the stock status of species targets around the MSY, support the development and implementation of robust and precautionary HS for SKJ YFT and BET in 572 & 573 and support the stock rebuilding plan for Yellowfin and Bigeye in IOTC.

Principle 2:

By December 2027, the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) aims to enhance information systems for both in-scope species and Endangered, Threatened, and Protected (ETP)/Out of Scope (OOS) species. Key actions include:

  • Strengthening Data Collection:

    • Implementation of electronic logbooks (e-logbooks).
    • Expansion of the observer program to improve data reliability.
  • Developing Strategies:

    • Contribution to partial management strategies for in-scope species by 2028.
  • Providing Evidence:

    • Submission of observer reports to demonstrate the proportion of fishing activities conducted on Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs).
    • Verification that no shark finning practices occur on purse seine vessels.

These efforts will ensure better management, data-driven decision-making, and sustainable practices within the fishery.

Principle 3:

By January 2029, the Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) aims to enhance tuna fishery management by:

  • Supporting the Tuna Fishery Management Plan:

    • Contributing to the development and implementation of a comprehensive plan for sustainable tuna fisheries.
  • Promoting Participatory Decision-Making:

    • Establishing a multistakeholder platform involving various stakeholders to ensure collaborative efforts in creating a fishery-specific management plan.

This initiative underscores the commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable fisheries management, fostering stakeholder engagement and long-term resource sustainability.
