Overview

What is a Prospective FIP?
Prospective FIPs intend to meet the requirements for active FIPs within one year. These projects are posted on FisheryProgress to help users identify opportunities to support developing FIPs and prevent the start of duplicate FIPs. Prospective FIPs are not yet demonstrating progress toward sustainability.

The southern red king crab fishery began as a 'test' fishery in 2005 and soon thereafter became an established commercial fishery at which time the pre-assessment and full assessment, for certification by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) was undertaken. The pre-assessment indicated that this fishery was capable to achieve full assessment, which was immediately undertaken.

Because this new, young fishery had limited data by which to conduct full assessment, the MSC provided an assessment alternative for young, data deficient fisheries. After a lengthy assessment, the southern red king crab fishery met or exceed all criteria to become MSC-certified with one exception - this being a definition for the standing biomass of this species in the South Atlantic Ocean. Although it was believed that the "limited data" procedure provided by MSC would be useful for the biomass determination, the procedure was written for finfish and proved unusable for assessment of a shellfish fishery.   In 2015 the full assessment for MSC certification was 'postponed'.

This fishery was then and is still under the management of the National Institute of Fisheries Development (INIDEP) of Argentina.  The MSC assessment of this fishery was previously and is once again being undertaken by the MSC certifier, Organización Internacional Agropecuaria (OIA).
