PROSPECTIVE South Pacific albacore and yellowfin tuna - longline

Overview

What is a Prospective FIP?
Prospective FIPs intend to meet the requirements for active FIPs within one year. These projects are posted on FisheryProgress to help users identify opportunities to support developing FIPs and prevent the start of duplicate FIPs. Prospective FIPs are not yet demonstrating progress toward sustainability.

This longline fishery is based out of Suva (Fiji) and targets South Pacific Albacore and Western and Central Pacific Yellowfin tuna. The fishing fleet consists of pelagic longline vessels that operate in the EEZs of the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and the WCPO High Seas. The two target tuna species are subject to both national and regional fisheries management measures and policies.

A pre-assessment has been completed. Discussions between FIP leads and stakeholders are currently under way to develop a scoping document, FIP Action Plan and Memorandum of Understanding.
