Overview

The Indonesian undulate venus clam (Paratapes undulatus) is a small bivalve that occupies the sandy and muddy seafloor of the Surabaya Region of Indonesia. The fishery uses dredge gears to target the species using 25 small (<5 GT) vessels that operate in the Gresik and Sidoarjo regencies of Surabaya. The vessels are said to operate three miles from shore in a 100km2 area. Rex Canning Ltd., is a subsidiary of Rex Pvt Ltd., based in Malaysia, and began operations in Indonesia in 1991 as a seafood processing company.

FIP Objective(s) 

Sustainable clam stocks: To ensure the catches of undulate venus clam and other primary species in the Surabaya Region of Indonesia do not exceed sustainable levels by 2030.

Minimizing environmental impacts: To promote the ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management by 2030.

Effective Management: To strengthen governance systems in the Surabaya Region of Indonesia, and across the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) by 2030.

Become suitable for certification by a fisheries standard: The FIP aims to eventually become suitable for certification from a fisheries standard like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) by January 2030.
