Overview
The Argentina red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) fishery is the main crustacean fishery in Argentina and one of the most important marine resources in the Southwest Atlantic. Operating freezing and ice-chilling vessels longer than 21m in length, the large fleet operating in this offshore fishery uses bottom trawling nets in Argentine federal waters (between parallels 42°S and 47°S).
The Argentine red shrimp fishery produced landings of around 80 thousand metric tons in between 2009 and 2013, surpassing the historical record in 2013 with landings above 100 thousand metric tons. In 2016, the fishery produced landings of around 180 thousand metric tons. The participation of the offshore fishery has been around 80% of red shrimp landings during the last years.
As of September 2024, FIP partners are, in alphabetic order: Achernar, Arbumasa, Argenova, Buena Proa / Oceanic Seafoods, Continental Armadores de Pesca (Conarpesa), Direct Source Seafoods, Estrella Patagónica, Food Partners Patagonia, Grupo San Isidro, Iberconsa, Maritime Products International, Newsan, Panapesca USA, Pedro Moscuzza e Hijos, Pesquera Deseado, Pesquera Santa Cruz, Pesquera Veraz, Red Chamber Argentina, and Wanchese Argentina. This FIP is being implemented with the technical support of CeDePesca.
The Argentina red shrimp (Pleoticus muelleri) fishery is the main crustacean fishery in Argentina and one of the most important marine resources in the Southwest Atlantic.
The ultimate objective of this FIP is to achieve the fishery’s certifiable status against the MSC standard by the end of December 2024. To this purpose, the FIP has set the following specific objectives:
- Continue to promote the adoption of a contingency plan as established in Article 13 of Resolution 7/2018 (Management Plan), based on abundance reference points, and monitor the implementation of fishery's Management Plan.
- Continue to promote the adoption, in the management measures for this fishery, of explicit short- and long-term specific objectives for the fishery management, which explicitly include care for other ecosystem components.
- Follow up discussions concerning selectivity devices in the context of Bycatch Commission created by the FFC to reduce the fishery interaction with non-target species and protected, threatened or endangered species.
- Cooperate with INIDEP in carrying out an experience with a video camera on the fishing gear in order to be able to observe the different species behaviour and contribute to design an ecologically and economically efficient selectivity system.
- Promote the regular functioning of red shrimp fishery Follow-up Commission as an appropriate forum for proposing management measures and for self-evaluation of management and research systems.
- Promote the implementation of a peer review of the fishery assessment methodology.
- Encourage the use of protocols used by the INIDEP Observer Program to include the collection of data necessary to comply with the MSC standard.
- Recommend to INIDEP to carry out studies that allow updating the information about the composition of the bottoms on which the fishery operates and the associated benthic communities and collect and analyze information that allows identifying the benthic communities present in the area of operation of the fishery and to in turn know your recovery rate.
- Promote the participation of captains and crew in in the FIP development.
