Overview

The Eastern Virginia oyster fishery occurs in the coastal areas of Virginia and targets the species Crassostrea virginica. There are five UoAs, based on harvest method and hatchery and non-hatchery stocks. This fishery is enhanced based on MSC FCP v2 7.4, and not based on introduced species. 

The UoAs are :

  • UoA 1:  Tongs and patent tongs from habitat enhanced areas with natural spat set and seed transfers.
  • UoA 2:  Dredges and hand scrapes from habitat enhanced areas with natural spat set and seed transfers.
  • UoA 3:  Tongs and Patent tongs from habitat enhanced areas with hatchery seed transfers plus natural spat set.
  • UoA 4:  Dredges and hand scrapes from habitat enhanced areas with wild stock hatchery seed transfers plus natural spat set.
  • UoA 5:  Cage production with wild stock hatchery seed transfers.

Overview

Project UK is working towards an environmentally sustainable future for UK fisheries by running Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs) on 12 UK fisheries that have been selected by the UK seafood supply chain. They were selected due to their importance for the UK market.

Project UK has been developed in response to the demand from the supply chain, retailers, industry and NGOs. The project will commission an MSC pre-assessment to inform and develop an action plan for each fishery, which will identify improvements.

King scallops are found on clean firm sand and fine gravel and in currents, which provide good feeding conditions. They occur along the European Atlantic coast from northern Norway, south to the Iberian Peninsula. The bathymetric range of distribution is from the low tide mark to over 100 m, but it is most common in waters of 20-70 m.

King Scallops are a non-quota species and are therefore not subject to a TAC. Total landings of scallops in 2017 by the UK fleet in the North Sea, West of Scotland and Irish Sea was 15,954t - approximately 60% of total landings were caught in the Central North Sea and the Irish Sea. Landings were dominated by Scottish-registered vessels (77%), with 90% of landings being made by vessels over 10m in length.

Explanation of Completion: The FIP has succeeded in achieving its objectives. The FIP updated one of its objectives from "Management improves to ensure long-term sustainability of the mussel fishery and access for local harvesters " to "Working group members determine there is a need for better long-term management and a request for a fishery management plan process is submitted to the state agency.", which was achieved in March 2022.

This FIP is focused on the wild harvest of mussels in the state of Maine (USA). The goals of this project are to establish and increase collection of stock status data, and to determine objectives and key components for a management plan. This is a fishery that occurs in state waters, and is managed by the Department of Marine Resources in Maine. There are both wild and farmed mussel industries in Maine – this FIP is focused on the wild fishery, which includes harvesters targeting adult mussels to be sold into the marketplace directly, and harvesters targeting seed mussels to transplant to bottom aquaculture leases for farming purposes. Most of the fishery is executed with drag gear, and there is a small amount of hand raking that occurs. The work group includes members from both the wild and bottom aquaculture industries, in addition to processors, distributors, and a major retailer, who are all committed to the long-term sustainability of this fishery in Maine.

King scallops are found on clean firm sand and fine gravel and in currents, which provide good feeding conditions. They occur along the European Atlantic coast from northern Norway, south to the Iberian Peninsula. The bathymetric range of distribution is from the low tide mark to over 100 m, but it is most common in waters of 20-70 m.

No TAC is set in the Channel scallop fishery. Total landed weight of scallops in 2015 by the UK fleet in area VIId and VIIe was 8,976t. Of this 97% was landed by scallop dredge (2% beam trawl and 1% others). Landings from VIId and VIIe were also dominated by English registered vessels (62%) although Scottish registered vessels also landed significant quantities (36%). Finally, of the catches from dredge fisheries almost all (95%) was by vessels over 10m LOA registered length.

The fishery is an enhanced Hatch and Catch (HAC) fishery for the Manila clam with seed supplied from Putian, Fujian Province and harvested by dredge in the waters of Donggang City, Liaoning Province. The FIP is implemented in cooperation among Dandong Taihong Foodstuff Co., Ltd, Nichirei Fresh Inc. and WWF.

 

Manila clam is one of the major seafood caught in the Yalu River Estuary, which is rich in biodiversity and one of the important coastal areas in the Yellow Sea Ecoregion as a shellfish producing area and a stopover site for migratory shorebirds. The clam sustains the lives of a large number of people living not only in China but also in neighboring countries such as Japan. Through the fishery improvement and achieving the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, the FIP will create a successful case of a sustainable clam fishery in harmony with the marine ecosystem, which will be expected to be replicated to the whole region in the Yellow Sea Ecoregion.
